James joined the 9th Bn Sherwood Foresters aged 15 years.
He served on Gallipoli and in Egypt with the Battalion.
When the 9th Bn arrived in France, he and nearly 200 men were loaned to 8th South Staffordshire Regiment.
A ‘Minnie’ destroyed a portion of trench trapping two Platoons.
One of the men killed was James and he was quickly put into a blanket with a comrade and buried.
After the war James was reburied in grave IV. F. 6. at Delville Wood Cemetery.

His Mum was attempting to get him out of the Army at the time of his death. She visited his grave once, on 9th August 1935.
